Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 that federal troops arrived in Galveston, TX to assume control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were set free; 2 years after the January 1, 1863, signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

The earliest celebrations in honor of Juneteenth date back to 1866. In June 2021, the Federal government formally recognized Juneteenth as a federal holiday and passed legislation indicating so in June 2021.
